Municipality of Voghiera

Voghiera, known locally as Ughièra, is a small municipality in Emilia-Romagna located in the province of Ferrara. Originally part of Portomaggiore, it acquired municipality status on 20 January 1960.
Among Voghiera's historical treasures is the Roman Necropolis of Voghenza, dating back to between the 1st century B.C. and the 3rd century B.C. The Roman Necropolis of Voghenza is an archaeological site of great historical importance located near the present-day town of Voghiera, which bears witness to the presence of a community that lived near the vicus, a settlement called Vicus Aventinus or Vico Habentia. Near the settlement is also the Delizia di Belriguardo, one of the Este residences, which today houses the Civic Museum. Other sites of interest include Villa Navarra, Villa Massari Ricasoli, and the Roman bridge. Currently, the bridge is underground and not visible, but it is located in the urban centre of Voghiera, in Via Enrico Fermi at Borgo Parioni. Although not accessible for visits, the Roman Bridge in Voghiera remains an important witness to the rich Roman history of the region. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
The area is renowned for the production of garlic PDO, a local excellence officially recognised in 2010, although the EU mark had already been in provisional use since 2007. Garlic must be grown and processed exclusively in the designated area, which includes Voghiera and other neighbouring municipalities. Voghiera contributes around 60 per cent of the total production, with 44 companies cultivating 130 hectares. The introduction of the European label has led to a shift from direct sales in the fields to the emergence of specialised processing and marketing companies, increasing the value of local garlic compared to competitors. Products such as patés, flavoured oil, pickles and even garlic ice cream are derived from this garlic.
A few years ago, a new process was introduced that led to the production of Black Garlic of Voghiera. This product is the result of a natural fermentation process of Garlic of Voghiera PDO
under controlled conditions.
